ROCKSTONE & FIRE

A Film Tribute to St. Bess

Rockstone & Fire: An original documentary which captures beautiful images of century old Spanish wall buildings, interviews with a masterbuilder and community members, and records the burning of an impressive traditional lime kiln. The film premiered in Jamaica in March 2019 and launched WARE’s campaign for islandwide educational film screenings, fundraising for summer programmes to teach the cultural practices and traditional skills required to preserve and reinstate these storied structures for new sociocultural purposes. WARE plans to ultimately rally communities around the creation of a cultural centre and living musuem.

This film is special because it focuses not simply on the cultural resource--the buildings--but the culturally inherited building process. The interviews reinforce the community cultural connection of this inheritance, while the recreation of the lime kiln and Spanish Wall process are a brilliantly rendered description of the process and its significance for the place and the people.
